Theatre info
The existence of the theater was known by 1835 when W. Leake visited the region and the first excavation to locate the theater began in 1992. Ms Vassiliki Adrymi, with an obvious emotion and enthusiasm, has guided us around. The research of the theater has not been completed yet. In fact, it has been only a central incision on the theater axis, whilst the stage building has been researched in its final phase. The theater is dated in the 4th century BC, constructed of carved parallelepiped volcanic stones. The auditorium of the theater is divided by a paved runway, the frieze, in two parts: the upper and the lower theater. The upper part has not been yet excavated. The only finding we have is the beginning of a stone upstage staircase. In the lower theater scene has been researched only the central part, where have been discovered eleven bench rows which are separated by three stone stairway width 60 cm, in three tiers.
Ms Adrymi told us that according to the excavations, seems that the lower theater part initially had fifteen benches rows and eight stairways which was split in seven tiers. Having these data it is possible to calculate that this theater was seating approximately 3,000 spectators.
According to Ms Adrymi, the comparative advantage of this specific theater is that, not only that all its material is saved , but remains also intact its natural environment.
Therefore, this is a small miracle that anxiously waits to brought into light.
